Front Cover - Development Planning

Where the photos for the magazine takes place is very important. What the models wear can have a level of importance as well but, since this magazine will have a feature of self-esteem, it will not be about how to dress or style, instead it will closely follow along with the seasonal theme, autumn.
The clothes for autumn would be burgundy, a dark orange, navy blue, as well as some green and yellow. The colors also have to compliment each other, not so much blend. That way it will stand out in the photos.
Color Ex:

Navy Blue
Orange Tiger

The outfits colors must be different from the background, and considering that the season for the magazine is in fall, I would like to take these photos outside. So, I will be using natural light and a natural background. I feel this will create a ambiance that will attract potential audiences.

Another thing the must be considered would camera angles, location, and models.

Camera Work:
The camera shot and angle will vary depending on which page the image will be placed. For instance, I plan to use a full body shot, for the cover page, to capture the models individual clothing and body type. No editing will be done to the models features because I want to show off a natural feeling (make-up will not be edited either). If it were within the magazine, it could be close-ups, head shots, or half shots.

Location:
I have already stated I would prefer the photos to be outdoors, so it would most likely take place in a park during the day. I will use the natural sunlight to enhance a models feature as well as give them a natural glow.

Models:
I have chosen three models for my magazine. One of them will be on the front cover, one or two of these models will be on the table of content. The one on the front cover page will also be on the feature story on the double-spread pages. I feel each of these models have unique features that would better represent my magazine.

Article for Double-Spread Pages

This is a small extraction that would be put into the double-spread pages.

Beauty isn't everything. Especially not to Isabella Bahamonde, a 15-year-old girl who learned this lesson at a what could be considered a young age.
"True beauty is from within. Not how tall and skinny you are or how soft and straight your hair is. It's about the type of person you are, and I'm happy that I have come to learn that myself."
Isabella Bahamonde wasn't always so positive when it came to her body. "I felt different from other girls. They were always so thin and overall just pretty."
She always felt "chubby", even at a young age. She would always call her self fat as a joke.
"I turned it into a joke so no one would  make fun of me... I thought it was helping, but in reality I just kept hurting myself."
When a word is repeated over, and over again, it becomes to feel true. It becomes a part of you. And it certainly does not help when your family mentions it many times.
"When going for a yearly check-up, the doctor told me I was almost overweight. When my dad found out, he would make small comments about my weight. It didn't feel good at all. Whenever I was meeting with old relatives, they would always call me "gorda" with is Spanish for fat. I would usually brush it off but I knew deep down it hurt."

  • This is an extraction of what would be used as the article for the double-spread page. I feel having the person interviewed do most of the story-telling would appeal more to the audience as well as allow them to gain a better understanding of this person. The audience could feel a connection with them and read their story in a comfortable way rather than a biography where is would merely seem as a boring article. Since the magazine is all about boosting self esteem and learning from other peoples journey, the persons story will be told from beginning to end, in a compressed manner.

Layout/Sketches: Double-Spread (3)

I created another double-spread page in order to give myself variety on what i could do for my magazine product.
In this sketch, i have layout a feature story, where it would go through a person's story that relates to the magazines theme. The story is to be inspirational towards readers in different aspects.
One page will hold the image, preferably of the person that is being interviewed for the story, and the other page will hold the story in a chronological order.
The layout would be simple with font that is legible both in size and color.

Layout/Sketches: Double-Spread (2)

Another idea that can be used would be a DIY double spread page. This would mainly focus on the new DIY trends for all genders as well as how to make them, what ingredients are used, warnings for allergic reactions, and the benefits of making it as well as using it.
For these pages, the layout would be very organized. The head title would be in a bold but creative font that stands out to readers.
While there are a variety of DIY's, I want to keep the DSP to be easily understandable rather than all over the place, so i must decided between a beauty or snack related DIY.
The layout will be simple but creative as well, for instance, on one page will be the title and the background information of the DIY, however on the second page, it could be an artistic twist on the step-by-step process of making the DIY.

Layout/Sketches : Double-Spread (1)

This is where the contents is being placed. Considering that my main focus for the magazine is to be about body imaging and boosting self-esteem, I felt that the magazine should have a section called "Let's Talk" which would be a part of the magazine that inputs peoples opinions based on a topic/subject that is related to body imaging. This would be the magazines way of boosting self-esteem, allow others to share their views, and possibly contain advice that can help a potential reader.
Here is the sketch of the potential layout for this section.

Here I would like to input a minimum of four advices/opinions of other people, most likely my own peers with permission. The squares, or boxes, will be photos that will be related to the topic, so there should be about four images. There is also a small section in the bottom right corner called "Self-Esteem Booster" which would be either an motivational statements or compliments that is meant for the reader. This could have a positive impact on a person, knowing others have gone through the same thing and give them a sense of hope knowing they were able to get through it.
The font would be elegant but legible as well as have contrast from the background color. The colors will be in theme of the season.

Layout/Sketch : Table of Contents

The table of contents is a critical part of the magazine because it allows audiences to find a certain content within the magazine easily. It could also show an audience other headlines and peak their interest.
My table of contents page must be eligible but also reflects the magazines theme and tone. I want it to be fun and natural. Here is the sketch I made

I feel that this may be a creative layout for the table of a contents. The model for this page does not need any specific characteristics to be placed here just need to have a close head shot. The page would stand out and have a fun, playful, and vibrant feeling. It stands out and would stand out even more when color is added.

Layout/Sketch : Cover Page

The cover of my magazine is important because it is supposed to the main attention grabber. The front page should have a cover image that reflects the main purpose of the magazine as well as have complimentary colors that better set the tone.
For my media product, due to the results of my survey, majority of the potential audience would like to see a male and female model. This is a better choice because it shows how the magazine is for all genders and not the typical stereotype of a beauty magazine being just for women.
Here is a sketch layout I made.

This is the basic concept for my main cover image. I like this sketch because I believe it will better represent the magazine, it could grab the attention of audiences, and when color is added with all the proper components, the magazine cover will be better harmonized.
To take this cover image photo, I will need two models who are different from each other as well as wear clothing that follow along the autumn edition.
